Please Welcome Jay D Roberts, MD, Author of the Powerful Memoir, Break the Chains

Break The Chains by Jay D. Roberts, MD

1999 found Dr. Jay Roberts in at-home hospice care preparing for his death from a neurological disease. At the point where he finally gave up, he experienced a spontaneous, overnight healing. It was not the first time he had “cheated” death. He had survived a fifty-foot fall from a cliff, a plane crash, and attempts on his life by rebel insurgents in remote areas in the Philippines in 1970s. This near-death escape was different though, because it was the culmination of a turbulent lifelong dialogue with God which started when he was a child being bull-whipped by his alcoholic father. Yet even after his complete recovery from disease, it would take a maximum security prison environment to reveal to him the mysterious power of forgiveness.
In the telling of his fascinating story—of extreme abuse, of the compulsion to become a pain and wound care specialist, of medical school in a third world country against a dangerous political backdrop, and of his return home to deal with the demons he’d left behind—Dr. Roberts tackles the big questions illuminating physical, mental, and spiritual growth. Break the Chains affirms faith in both God and the human spirit. It is as revealing and inspirational as it is truthful and poignant.

Dr. Roberts has some inspirational words to share with us -
THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF FORGIVENESS:
Forgive and break the chains that have bound you for years. The weight of hatred will lift from your shoulders. Old festering wounds will begin to heal. You will be set free.
HOW DOES ONE GO ABOUT LEARNING TO FORGIVE:
For me, I had to understand to forgive did not mean to forget. I was told for years, “forgive and forget.” But I could not forget. Therefore I never forgave.
I also thought if I forgave, I would have to love that person I hated. Not true.
To forgive does not mean you must love that person or even like them. I have forgiven my father, but I will never forget or love him. But I no longer hate him.
I had to forgive God. I had prayed for years as a child for God to help, but He did not. So I first thought He did not exist, and later figured I was not good enough to be loved by Him, therefore I deserved to be abused.
Yes, I had to forgive myself. I had to learn to like myself.
To forgive you must break down the wall of unforgiveness that holds you hostage, imprisoned. The stones of the wall include hatred, pride, fear, pity, and many more.
To forgive may not be a one-time event. You may be tempted to rebuild your wall. I was. I had to pray daily and get into the Scripture—to get strength and stay on the path of forgiveness, believing Jesus forgave me and I must forgive.
For some forgiveness seems impossible. It took me thirty-two years after the death of my father to forgive. My father never heard the three words, “I forgive you.”
I pray you do not wait too long.
Forgive and be set free.

But she could never fall for a man so intent on chasing danger...could she?

FREE This Week on Kindle

The Vampire and the Vixen is FREE this week on Kindle. It's a tongue-in-cheek is-he-or-isn't-he vampire story. And it's a novella, so it's a quick read!

Kelsey Adams is determined to get ahead without the influence of a famous father or by getting special favors from her boss. So it was a big mistake to kiss Rafe Alexander on the balcony at a library fundraiser.

Rafe is mysterious, charming, and sexy. And he's Kelsey's new boss. He wants people to accept him for what he is. Which could be difficult because Kelsey has more than a sneaking suspicion he's a vampire.

Can Kelsey look beyond that and trust him with her heart to have the future she wants? And will he still be there when the sun comes up?

Monsters, zombies... and the Titanic?

Every author hopes they came up with something unique enough to draw readers.

While not everyone likes, or wants, to read about zombies, zombie books are still hot - and getting hotter. With the release of World War Z, zombies are big in the general public, too.

The fun, yes, fun, of the theme (or sub-genre since many writers consider it a genre unto itself) is that you can use zombies for whatever metaphor you want or to address whatever situation you prefer. In my book, GIRL  Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie (coming in August), zombies and turning part-zombie can include views on appearance, (a big thing to a teen), fitting in, and other issues. (Pre-order Girl Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie at Amazon.)

Writing about zombies also offers writers the chance to turn history on its ear as author Catt Dahman does with the Titanic. See what she has to say about her take on the Titanic - and yes, zombies -  at GirlZombieAuthors.

New Fourth of July Short Mystery!

My short story, Booneville Retribution, is out just in time for the Fourth of July!

Larry’s a hardworking Vietnam vet who loves his country and is proud of his small town roots. He’s lived the better part of his life in Booneville, where Old Glory flies proudly over town square, and the Fourth of July is the biggest celebration of the year. Then, the closing of Halport Industries—the town’s economic lifeblood—devastates Booneville’s residents. Families are torn apart, small businesses dry up, and once lively neighborhoods become nothing but rows of abandoned houses. However, when the downturn of the economy threatens the town’s Fourth of July festival, Larry becomes determined to change things. Risking everything, he devises a plan to make the people forget about their problems and restore a sense of pride in their community and their country. A 4th of July short story.

I hope you'll check it out!

Temporary Roommates launch week continues

Saturday April 20th, my novella, Temporary Roommates hit the digital world.  Set in my new hometown of St. Louis, I'm so happy to share the world of Annie and Troy.

When a determined nurse and a hot intern find the perfect apartment, the same perfect apartment, they must find a way to share it for ninety days, without killing each other.

Annie Baxter has her dream job.  Now, all she needs is a cheap apartment close to the hospital.  Troy Saunders knows his life as an intern is all about the long hours. He doesn't have time to play doctor to some Nurse Barbie.  So when his sister finds a great apartment walking distance to work and next to the best running paths in the city, he’s sold. Two leasing agents, two prospective renters, one apartment.  Can they co-exist without fireworks?

New Mystery Novel - Murder For Bid

MURDER FOR BID

I’m excited to announce the release of my new mystery novel, Murder for Bid.  Seeing the long-term goal of publishing a novel come to fruition has been both a challenging and exciting process. I can’t even express how happy I was when the first copies were delivered.  I almost hugged the UPS man!

Here’s a description:

Phillipena O’Brien, known to her family and friends as Pippi, is as quirky as her name. But nothing is more quirky than the way she makes her living.  Junk-running is her profession and she’s good at it.  After nearly a decade of managing large portfolios for a major Chicago investment firm, Pippi cracked.  She fled her office, disappeared for a couple weeks (much to the horror of her family and friends who still don’t think that she’s come back to reality), and reappeared a new woman with a new plan. Shedding her designer suits for jeans and T-shirts, she embarked on a new career as a resale merchandiser. Now, she peruses garage sales, consignment shops and garbage cans in search of cast-off treasures to ‘upcycle’ and sell on-line.  It’s an honest living and Pippi is content with her stress-free life … that is, until she finds herself tangled up in the mysterious death of a wealthy suburban socialite.
Enjoy following along with Pippi’s fun projects and learn a bit about on-line auctioning. Just don’t be surprised when she stumbles upon a dead body or two and takes on a mystery with the same enthusiasm that she puts into her trash-to treasure projects.

Order on Amazon: (paperback or kindle edition) http://amzn.to/YGfBkx

Giving Characters Character

What sets your characters apart? Do you give your characters character?

In my latest book, Angel Sometimes, Angel curses a bit. Not every other word, but she was on the streets for almost six years. She picked up some curse words.  In my next book, Dismembering the Past, the main character Hallie McAllister does not curse. She has other "characteristics" that identify her. For example, she boxes.

I've written a post about giving characters character over on The Blood-Red Pencil. You can read the post, but before you link over, leave a comment here. What gives your character character? Or have you read a book where a character was memorable? What made her/him memorable?
